I've had a beard pretty much continuously since I graduated from HS in 1981, with the exception of a few months when I worked a contract job for IBM in the mid 80's.

Facial hair update!

Shaved my beard in early January. It keeps trying to grow back. I think I'll keep it short for a while...

For the majority of my adult life I was in the military, . . . . so I had short hair and was clean shaven. But, after becoming a civilian, I grew a beard about 5 years ago. I do use a beard balm every day after showering to help control and shape it. I also do my own trimming and shaping with just a small pair of nice scissors, . . . but I do wish it was thicker than it is and less gray than it is. I did shave it once, . . . . but that felt really weird and I immediately started growing it back. Still, . . . sometimes I'm still tempted to try beardless again.

This is my first attempt at letting it grow out. I think around 3 months?

Maybe due to habit.

The thing is, I used to shave once a week, and my skin got really irritated.

Until I changed the shaving system. I removed spray foams, and I removed multiblade head razors, for brushes a good soap, usually from my city's brand, Lea, or La Toja, if I'm in a hurry, I use "American Crew" shaving gel; and also safety razors.

The sight of that double edge razor gave me the same feeling one gets when you see a dude take a hit to the groin. It's just painful to look at.

When I started shaving decades ago I used my Dad's razor once and promptly cut myself on the jawline and it bled like a stuck pig.I have had the same styptic pencil for over 25 years. It is down to a nub but still works like a charm.

Like MoT's GrandDad, I can grow a beard at the drop of a hat. I used to be clean shaven for over twenty years while I worked for UPS and a few financial institutions. Once I "retired" it was "whatever grows" will be shaved off in a week. My facial hair comes in black and grey which makes me look a lot older than my 51 years would indicate. When I shave, my wife gets mad because I then look younger than her. lol

As some aficionados say, "no cut, no glory". The first time, a decade and a half ago, that I picked up a safety razor instead of the Mach3 I did it with "more fear than Scooby Doo". I don't think I hardly cut myself. The problem comes when you gain confidence and start going faster.... With a little bit of habit it is rare to cut yourself.

About appearances, I have recently met a co-worker who has a long, bushy and quite gray beard. The first time I saw him I thought he wouldn't have long to retire, I thought he was about 10 years older than I am. He is only a few months older than me.
