And another:
Why were the films of the first trilogy considered to be independent films?
George Lucas financed the prequels himself.

Good guess, but no. Actually Fox paid the budget for the first Star Wars movie. $8 million was not much, but they financed it. Lucas had a chance to negotiate up his $150K director’s salary after the success of American Graffiti, but instead asked for and received the merchandising rights for the franchise.

Star Wars movies do not have opening credits, which was so controversial at the time that Lucas quit several film institutions (like the Director’s Guild)...and as a result the Star Wars movies considered to be independent films.

Q: which member here both changed George Lucas' furnace AND had access to all of his surrounding houses that housed nothing but star wars movie posters and props?
A: the question was kind of a humblebrag [emoji23]

Not to be argumentative, but my answer is correct
...from a certain point of view.
You used the phrase, "the first trilogy," which COULD be interpreted as Episodes I - III, aka "the prequels."
And George, via Lucasfilm, did self finance those three.
