As you may have noticed, we we're offline this morning. This was caused by the "Thanks" plug-in going rogue and using up way too many server resources. This triggered an automatic suspension by our hosting provider as they thought it was a malicious attack. The "Thanks" plug-in has been disabled, hopefully temporarily so I can determine if that was indeed the cause, and take steps to prevent it from happening in the future.

I apologize for the disruption and for any confusion that may have caused.

Drop - Changes in Several Drop Communities and Interests

Post by pgcity »

Not sure if anyone has seen this but it would seem the watch section will survive for now

The short version:
We plan to improve discoverability on our site for the most active communities like Blades/EDC, Mech Keys, Audiophile, Watches and Outdoors
We are combining the “Blades” and “EDC” communities, and naming it “EDC”
We will be sunsetting several other communities, starting first with Board Games, DIY Tech, PC Gaming and Quilting, and re-evaluating our approach to the balance of our communities in the coming weeks.

Following additional evaluation, the next communities sunsetted will be Writing, Cooking, Photography, and TCG. Accessories and Apparel will be renamed to Style.

Interesting. If watches goes I will check that site much less often. I get the daily emails, and lately after a watch or maybe two it's nothing but knives, and I have never clicked on a knife or looked at knives on the site.
I wish that watch were 38mm?

I hope they're not being hasty. Quote: "Following additional evaluation, the next communities sunsetted will be Writing, Cooking, Photography, and TCG..." Ummm...sounds like they've already made up their minds. Is the site "too" diverse? I'm particularly disappointed in the Photography category--had some good deals, and that hobby is not going anywhere.

ETA: as of this morning Cooking, Photography, and TCG have already disappeared from the Interests list.

Yes, discoverability sure has improved. When I'm shopping for kitchen knives, for instance, of course EDC is the category which comes instantly to mind. I look forward to their deals on cookware bandoliers so I can be fully prepared to filet, chop, dice, julienne, baste, broil, broast, saute, and simmer at a moment's notice wherever I might be with a veritable chef's warehouse of supplies constantly carried so conveniently on my person.

On the other hand it seems lately that the total number of available drops has been, well, dropping as well. That sure makes it easier to find one entry when there are so few other offers to slog through! Ingenious fellows there at Drop.

I almost miss the writing and photo categories. The discounts never really got me all that excited though.

It indeed sounds like they've made their minds up.

Anywho, as long as they keep Mech Keys and Watches, they'll continue to get my business.

If they drop watches I'll have zero reasons to visit Drop.

I'm not completely surprised by Drop's move to discontinue watches.
Lately they've been really featuring bottom barrel brands.

Guess their collabs with Glycine, Invicta, and Ball didn't pan out as well as they hoped.

Sad to see another deal option disappear though.

Must be hard for Drop to cash in on watches these days. I'm not surprised they gave up. I think their success in the past was based on helping unload excess inventory, which it seems is not as necessary a service lately.

Even just Seiko retiring their huge catalogue of old "5" models, which were often sub $100-200, must have really changed their business. Add to that other factors like watch collecting becoming increasingly mainstream, affordable brands moving up market or handling their own clearance stores, and scalpers... well, apparently there just isn't as much space for Massdrop anymore.

And that is my 2 cents. :)

I hope amazing watch deals and good places to shop make a huge come back in the future though!

Sad to see them go but things have fallen apart there. On the other hand I always assumed I'd pick up an Orient defender there but alas not.

This explains why those Glycine collabs started showing up at Ashford.
