SUCCESSFUL : Kickstarter: The 220 Watch Company - Diver Bill bronze automatic

Post by TheJohnP »

This is the second watch from 220 Watch Company inspired by "Diver Bill," aka William Walker.
You can read about their first model in this post - viewtopic.php?f=25&t=395&p=12033&hilit=walker#p12033

Whereas the first model was made of copper and brass with 3ATM water resistance, this new dive watch is made of bronze with a water resistance of 30ATM. Quite the difference.

Early Bird pricing with choice of strap is around $453
Early Bird pricing with both straps included is around $471

Kickstarter pricing with choice of strap is around $473
Kickstarter pricing with both straps included is around $498

Estimated delivery is December 2020

Our first watch was inspired by the copper, and brass helmet of the famous British diver William Walker. In 1906, Walker dived underneath Winchester Cathedral, and over the course of 5 years, with zero visibility, he re-laid over a million bricks of the South Eastern foundations of the cathedral with his bare hands, saving the cathedral from collapsing. That watch was designed to emulate the look and feel of the dive helmet. The next natural step for us was to create a dive watch. As this watch is less formal, Walker's nickname seemed a fitting tribute: Diver Bill.

I often wonder if people really care about the "story" behind these KS offerings.

Glad to see it's not super big!

I'm generally a sucker for a good story.

But read through enough campaigns and you can get a sense if the story is sincere or if they're forcing a story onto a watch that was just thrown together.

I just feel like the company name is just going to keep going on and on and on. Feel like I’m going to get an old manuscript to comb through to get to the watch.

Here's where the story goes off the rails.
Company name 220 = "second(2) to(2) none(0)"
Ugh

Swap the STP with a Miyota 9 series and knock it down to $350 - then I might take a look.

Remember when bronze was a good material for watches? No? Neither do I.
