Talk me out of this deal!

Post by TheJohnP »

In the spirit of WPAC, and so this isn't a 100% enabling forum, starting this thread to talk sense into anyone on the fence about a purchase.

I'll start.

Saw this preowned square Hamilton Jazzmaster auto on Ashford. With their PO discount, watch comes to $240. A fantastic price for a Hamilton auto with a 2824.

My hesitation is that I already have a somewhat similar style with my Kemmner Tonneau, with an arguably better Miyota 9015.

Image

Then my other issue with the Hamilton is with the tiny hands. That is really becoming a pet peeve of mine. Again, comparing to the Kemmner where the hands get closer to edge of the dial. Kemmner also has a better date placement.

But I do have a big soft spot for Hamiltons. I came into this hobby via vintage, so own several of their pre70's models. Only other current Hamilton in my collection is the Ventura quartz.

Trying to resist. Need some encouragement.

Dude, I’m so unfit for posting here. Maybe I can do better with the temptation to resist and get to post here.

The hands are too small and have poor contrast. The date window breaks up otherwise good placing of the hour markers. It's square and you already have a square watch.

@robotazky

That actually crossed my mind. With a previously owned auto at such a low price, it likely needs an overhaul sooner than later.

I think I can do better. I've never even heard of Kenmore watches and I like the look of that one better.

Does that help?

I may have misspelled the name of the watch. :)

Figured that was just an autocorrect error.
Kemmner, or Roland Kemmner, made these watches out of Germany and sold them via ebay.
Had a good reputation and retired last year, I believe.

Well the Hamilton has a good Swiss movement in it and it's from a reputable brand. Plus the price is good. I'd say that if you want to get it, then get it, BUT you need to then flip the Kylie Jenner. There's just too much redundancy to keep both. So I would decide before buying the Hamilton, do you like it more than the Kylie Jenner or not?

You really don't need another square watch, especially one lacking any sort of style. It is literally just a square watch. How often do you even wear the Kemmner? When going to your watch box on one of those rare days when you want to go square, do you honestly think you would pick up the Hamilton over the Kemmner? At least the one you have oozes style and has a much more unique shape to it. The hammy, not so much.

Don't think you can evade your peeve -- the hands will always bother you. Then it will be hard to recoup your money when you sell it.

Compared to your square, the Hamilton looks like an old guy's watch.

Think of what else you could put that money towards. If you don't buy the Hamilton, it's like $240 off you next purchase!

It is used, after all.

None of your straps fit it.
