YouTube rec: HSNY lecture series

Post by cheddar »

(Another spinoff from sistem_32 's Haute Horologie thread, haha.)

Based upon sistem_32 's recommendation of the Habring lecture, and another mention of the series from another source I can't recall, I checked out the Horological Society of New York's YouTube lecture series. Basically, they've been taping the lectures at their monthly meetings for the last couple of years and they are all available on their YouTube channel now. Each one's about an hour long, and it's been my pandemic late-weekend-night watching for the last couple of months.

So far, I've watched about 10 of them. I've enjoyed all of them, but those I would particularly recommend, in addition to the Habring lecture, include:

* Wiliam Massena's assessment of the Swiss Watch Industry from a couple of years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQFYdtqtSyY
* Dr. Rebecca Struther's lecture on the origins of watch forgeries and mass production: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2kPZ3MTmUY
* Peter Speake-Marin's introduction to his Naked Watchmaker website (fascinating some of the little watchmaker oddities and tricks he points out): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJKfbVroZ_M
* Eric Wind on collecting vintage watches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUgOUVREkJs
* Grand Seiko USA on the spring drive movement (definitely has some promotional feel to it, but interesting to learn about the movement and design concepts, nonetheless): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1T32GWdkew

These *are* lectures, so they're not the most exciting thing in the world unless you're interested in digging deeper into the history and technical sides of watchmaking, but if you are, then it's a very enjoyable way to spend a late Friday evening with your favorite beverage. :) I'll continue to post additional lectures of note as I make my way through them. (I've liked them well enough that I even signed up for HSNY membership, to support them and their efforts to support watchmaking education in the USA -- I need *someone* to be able to service all these watches I'm buying. :) )
