How to Use Springbar, Screwdriver & Pin Punch Tools Without Scratching the Case or Bracelet.

Post by PetWatch »

Regardless how careful we may be, one slip is all takes for these metal tools to slide off and scratch our precious watch case or bracelet.

Tools of the trade:

Plastic food wrap, even a very thin film is very resilient against tears, sandwich baggie, or similar clear plastic will prevent tool slip ups from scratching the watch metal case or bracelet.

Fold plastic over the pin punch pin or screwdriver tip using appropriate thickness suitable for the job at hand, or lay over parts to be worked on. Fold thin plastic food wrap several times if necessary and place surrounding the tool tip. No need to over do it, a thin film works for most jobs.

Particularly useful when starting to push in bracelet pin or once installed to punch it flush. This is when the majority of slip offs occur.

The screwdriver trick is great for removing and installing screw on case back covers, battery holder screws or the like. Don't know how useful it is once you get deeper into the movement.

The springbar is a little harder because it will cut the plastic if too thin and too thick prevents a good grip on the pin.

Use or omit plastic over tool options:

Installing bracelet: Fold the plastic around each lug, punch a hole through it at the pin hole with the pin side of the springbar tool. Once installed tear off plastic. This also protects from scratches when the pin slides over the lug.

Removing bracelet: I haven't done this yet, but if you stretch a thin film of plastic food wrap flush across both lugs, or tuck it in if possible, carefully remove the pin so that it doesn't lift plastic to expose the metal.

Simple enough and it works.
