Mido Ocean Star: Opinions?

Post by MoT »

What is the hive mind's consensus on Mido?

In particular, I'm interested in the Ocean Star line with the "Caliber 80" movement.

I can't comment on this model, but I will comment on the brand, as I own a Multifort.
I would say that Mido is on a just slightly higher level than Hamilton in the Swatch hierarchy.

Mido has some very interesting dial and case details.
I think they are a highly underrated brand.

Bought my titanium one in November used from someone on eBay. Still one of my favorite watches from my collection. Everything about it screams quality. And the bracelet is the best bracelet I have ever owned on a watch. Far better than my Longines hydroconquest which is already a good bracelet. The watch is super thin for an automatic diver so I have no problems wearing it with dress shirts.

As for the Caliber 80, it's just a great movement overall. The newer Hamilton's use a version of it, where the beat rate is slowed down so it can last 80 hours. The Mido is slightly modified though because it uses a Silicon balance spring. That's insane if you think about the price of the watch. The movement itself is essentially a ETA CO7.621which is based upon the eta2824. Mido was the first to add in a silicon balance spring though.

The blue lume is good, not quite like my Seiko monsters but still nearly there. You honestly can't go wrong with these watches. One notable thing is the caseback is screwed on with 6 screws I believe as opposed to the standard way of screwing down a caseback. But this doesn't affect water resistance at all.

If I had one complaint it's that the crown is a bit small for winding and screwing/unscrewing but I've gotten used to it. Think of the crown size on the Orient Ray 2 in proportion to that case size. Because of how thin it is the bezel is a tad harder to turn compared to something like an skx. But honestly don't let these turn you off from the watch. It's awesome

I love Ti watches and I must say that the "burnt" titanium sheen is awesome.

Is that a coated or specially treated titanium? None of mine shine that way.

I don't think it's coated or treated in any particular way but I could be wrong. From what I understand it's grade 2 titanium?

Great watch. It wears quite large in my opinion. Long flat lugs.

If you get a chance have a look at the new Ocean Star too, that's really great as well.

That would actually work well for me. I am certainly not lacking for wrist real estate.

I had the Titanium version and found the movement to be insanely accurate. The bracelet as mentioned was very nice indeed.

Even though it's an underated, but high quality watch, in the end I just struggled with matching it with different straps due to the color so I sold it.

Also it was one of the watches I sacrificed when an awesome deal for a MM300 fell in my lap.

I used to have the blue dial and liked the watch in general. The sliding adjustable clasp was a nice feature. The watch was nice quality but nothing really special. I really didn't like the crown because I was never sure if it was screwed in all the way. Too small and not enough grip. But it is a nice $500 watch.

I have some more pictures on my site, please remove link if not allowed.
