The number of exhibitors drop by 50%, tanking the financials of its parent company. Months later, Swatch Group added insult to injury by announcing they would not be attending the Baselworld in 2019. When Baselworld brought in a new executive to make things right, he spent his third day on the job trying to persuade the CEO of Swatch Group to return. Apparently it didn't work. Now Swatch says they're never coming back to Basel. An article from Hodinkee details the changes for this year's Baselworld and its aspirations going forward.

Swatch Says Baselworld Pullout Is Permanent as Watch Fairs Wilt

As Baselworld 2019 Approaches, The Watch Industry's Biggest Show Faces An Uncertain Future
Would think this to be an amazing opportunity for microbrands to fill the gap and begin attending and showcase the high quality and innovation that is now possible with crowdfunding. Baselworld could become an opportunity for consumers and media outlets to handle watches typically only sold online. This would bring unprecedented media coverage tt microbrands and could really hurt Swatch.

That would be amazing, but I'm sure Baselworld would expect all the micros to be able to offset the cost of Swatch pulling out. And I don't see that as being feasible in any way.

I don’t know the current price, but the undecorated booth less than 10 m2 in jewellery section of Baselworld used to cost around $150-250k (depending on the location in the hall) back in 2012/2013 as I know some people in the business who rented a booth for several companies at once (to keep the cost down)

They said the price for watches booth are much higher since they need to do extra works with decorations and can customize the lights placements etc

Britons aren’t just stocking up on essential medicines and toilet paper in case Brexit cuts off supplies from the rest of the world. Retailers are hoarding Swiss watches, too.

A fairly extensive and interesting article from the New York TImes examines vintage watches as an investment. You're likely to be familiar with some of the names and the watches discussed in this story.

I'm not sure that this quite qualifies as news but rather a watch journalist's story of his terrible experience coming through Swiss customs on his way to Baselworld.

That is insane. I have taken a watch roll with me across borders nearly every week for 5 years with no issues (France, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Spain, Chechnya, Canada, US). Will definitely think twice before doing this in Switzerland.

Timex is teasing something big. Are they going to be bringing out a line of MEMS technology watches? If so, that could prove to be quite a game changer.

Decent article detailing MEMS:

Thanks for linking the article. Really cool technology...to replace magnetic stepping motors in watches with this would give an amazing amount of battery life.

In watch auction news, a Patek Philippe made for Muammar Gaddafi sold for $193,750, much more than expected, while another belonging to Eric Clapton brought in $711,000. And coming up in May, a rare and fabled Vacheron Constantin goes under the hammer.

Add two more notable watches to the list of upcoming auctions. On May 12th, Christie's will auction a rare vintage Rolex chronograph owned by Andy Warhol. Also in May, a Grand Complication pocket watch hand-made by George Daniels will be auctioned by Phillips and is expected to bring in $1.5 million.

A British 'genius' painstakingly made 23 pocket watches entirely by hand in his lifetime, and one of those is expected to go for more than $1.5 million at auction

Curious as to why they would put genius in quotes. George Daniels clearly was one.
