NTH Tikuna arrived! Now for a mini-review.

Great 40mm dive watch that wears easy at 11.5mm thick. Case is just beautiful with polished, beveled and brushed finishes. Drilled lugs fitting one of the nicest bracelets I've ever seen. The 20mm end links fit perfectly into the case and overall it has an oyster feel to it tapering to an easy-to-wear 18mm. Honestly you could install the bracelet inside/out - the finishing looks that good. Peer through the sapphire crystal and you'll see a very nicely detailed dial face with superlumed indices and hands sweeping away at 28,800bph powered by the Miyota 9015 with a 42 hour power reserve. The black, stainless, also superlumed bezel is 120 clicks of perfection with absolutely no back play. TimeBum calls it retro-futurism. I like that description and I agree. I'd have paid the full $650 asking price for this one, but absolutely smitten at $473 post-rebates.

Enough talk.........

I'm quite enamored and like it a lot more than I thought I would. My only gripe is the band. It's stiff and not sure I like the feel. Hopefully it breaks in well because it looks good.

Image
Looks good. Unfortunately the band won't get better. It's a big reason you almost never see anyone wear the stock strap. I've owned and flipped a few examples of that watch. The closest I ever came to getting it broken in and more comfortable was taking off the coating with acetone. So I basically chemically distressed it and then manually distressed by continually bending, folding and manipulating it and then I wore it a lot but it just never really got that much better. Great watch.....not a great strap. But google images and instagram are wonderful resources for figuring the best strap for well known watches.
To get you started, try an Erika's Originals MN strap in green with yellow stripe (or cheaper variant available just about everywhere ).
For a bracelet, the Strapcode oysters etc seem expensive but are worth every penny if you want your Alpinist to give off the air (heir?) of a Rollie Explorer. Forget other bracelets.
Straps? Never found one I liked enough. Others have, and as yinzburgher said there are lots of pictures around.

Enjoy a great watch!

Just got my new Helm Komodo Diver. Having a Vanuatu already in my collection I can tell you these watches are fv<k!ng tanks. Bullet-proof NH35, wearable but tall 40mm width, 15.5mm thick from back to domed crystal. Absolutely love this color-way, especially the orange date wheel. The bracelet has a very Seiko Monster meets Panerai Luminor feel to it. Thick, brushed finish with screws and solid end links. Great value at $315. Not quite the finish of the NTH, but at 1/2 the price, it shouldn’t be. Zero regrets! She’s a beaut Clark! Thanks Eddie.

New watch alert!

Omega Seamaster 300m "Bond", ref. 2531.80

While I didn't buy this watch from the deals thread, the band is from this deal that TheJohnP posted back in November!

From what I've read online the 4962**** serial number makes this one of the first 2531.80s to come out of the factory (c. 1993-94). It's fitted with an 1109 movement (c. 1986--my birth year!) and features tritium lume. How gorgeous is that patina!?

The Raketa big star came on a really interesting bracelet, which is like a metal ribbon that adjusts like a millinaise strap.

The Russian crest turned out to be a Raketa as it has a Raketa 2609 movement.

The Vostok was the real prize. It runs fast, but is close to new.

It came in the original box, on a barely used branded strap with an order form/catalog and certificate.

Congrats! I’m interested in a birth year watch too but haven’t come across anything worth keeping.

This Timex Sprite arrived about a week ago. I was concerned about timekeeping when it first arrived, but a few passes over the demagnitizer and it's ticking as well as one can expect a 50-year old disposable watch to run. Currently squeezed onto an 18mm perlon, I'm in search of the perfect 16mm strap.
