Elegant/Dressy Watches With 100m WR

Post by cortman »

I've been super smitten lately with the Cartier Santos. It is so classy and elegant, and just really blends casual with dressy in a unique way, and on top of it all is eminently suited for the beach, pool, whatever with that 100m of water resistance. Of course I hear that the high polished bezel scratches if you look at it too hard, so it's probably not the most rugged of choices for those activities. :D
So here's the challenge: what are some dressy, elegant watches that may look like a dress watch, but also have 100m of water resistance? Also looking for watches on the smaller side, as that generally goes with elegance- maybe a max size of 41-42mm. Props if under $1k as well.
For the record, I'm fully aware that 50 would probably be plenty for mild water use. I'm looking for only 100.

Found one to kick it off. Love the look of this. Sinn 1736 Classic (or 1746 Classic if you like a larger, 42mm watch). 36mm, enamel dial, ETA movement. 10 bar WR.
Around $1800. Ouch.

Isn't that part of the reason everyone defaults to the SARB033?

So none of these are quite as dressy as the Sinn, but I'd rock any of these with a suit:

Christopher Ward C65 Trident Vintage (100m):

Nomos Club (100m):

And neither of these get bonus points for being affordable but:

JLC Polaris (100m)

And a 214270 (100m)

If this was 100m, it would be perfect for this.

The 36.4mm kontiki a few of us bought this week is 100m with a screw down crown.

Image

My sbgx085 is 100m rated but non screw down crown

Image

Here's another seiko I've got but forget the model number, it's 100m rated. Maybe too busy but they make a dressier version of it in non chrono

Image

And then other good options would be Casio Oceanus s100, Longines conquest, Seiko alpinist Sinn 556i, etc.

I think you can dress up these Farers, especially with their bracelet or Milanese. They offer 10ATM but they are above US$1000 though.

Their regular 3-handers are <$1000 but only has 5atm.

And you have the Lorier Falcons. <US$500, Miyota, 10atm, 36mm. You'd have to wait a bit but 1) they have a very good waitlist system (i.e., things won't get crazy like Helm), 2) the Green/Gilt one is already ahead of schedule and being offered to those on the waitlist. Perhaps the same might happen to the other variants. Okay, they might look a bit sporty but I think with a nice set of leather straps they can be dressed up nicely.

^ The Lorier might be the best answer yet.

All of the Seiko Presage models with this particular case should be rated to 100m water resistance. The first one is my SARX029. The one below that is a SPB067. There are others too. Push-pull crown. A bit oversized at 40.5mm and 12mm thick but I think of them as dress watches.

Damn. I should have thought of this, since I owned one of these for a long time.

Here's another that fits the bill (except for the bill you pay):
FC Yacht Timer GMT (100m)

And I think this Orient is dressy enough to count:

And another Kontiki from the HUISABH thread. This one is 200m according to Ashford:

It turns out this field is WAY more crowded than I thought. There are some great pieces here!
So far I think the ones that best align with the idea I have in my head are the two tone Kontiki, the Kontiki with romans, the Presage models, and the Lorier.

I'm really into the black Lorier. Great selection of watches here.

Well, I mentioned this in the SARB thread, but Oris Artix fills the bill.
P1100947.JPG
My Citizen Grand Classic -- a watch I got for about $300 and is easily worth $700, also fits the bill. This is a "pics never do it justice" watch if there ever was one. It's so well built, and the bracelet is so nice, complex, and comfortable. The only thing is the blue hands look just a tad too blue in some lights. If I only had bought the black dialed version when all of these were on sale... If I found one for $400, I'd probably still buy it. It's the only watch in my collection I have any desire to have "twins" of.
P1100915.JPG
P1100925.JPG
The Mido Multifort line is usually 100m with a screw down crown. This is an older model (and departed from my collection because it was too big), but I think they work as "dressy", if not elegant.
IMG_5017.JPG
A few Ball watches, like the Fireman Victory (and I _think_ the Marvelight) lines are 100m. Here's my former Victory (stolen many years ago). The only problem with Ball is that they almost never have a matching date wheel, and as a result the dates often completely destroy the design and stick out like a sore thumb.
IMG_4423.JPG
Oh, and though I've never owned it, the Casio Oceanus always comes up in these types of discussions. Maybe they're not "dressy," but they're not particularly casual either (except for the dolphin logo and the "tough mvt." on the s100)

I posted a similar-ish question in WUS (basically asking for an affordable GADA watch). Got a lot of dress divers, but some other out-of-the-box suggestions.
https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/one- ... t-49619247

And there's my favorite thread of all time on WUS -- JakeJD's "Perfect Daily Wearer" thread.
He's limited the watches to only black (and included a requirement of really good AR coating), but they have to be "business-bullet proof" and 100M WR. So there are lots of good suggestions there.
https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/the- ... t-16731266

Since the thread is 5 years old, lots of the watches are probably discontinued or hard to find, and there probably aren't a ton that you'd consider "elegant," but there are still many good suggestions.
