Show your Black Cases, PVD, Composite...
For a long time I steered away from black cases due to all the comments about how scratches and dings will stand out and are more difficult to repair than stainless and others, which is true. But, a bad enough scratch and ding can ruin any watch and I don't refrain from purchases because of that. Since jumping this hurdle black cases have become quite a favorite of mine. Love the look of it on certain watches.

Citizen CB0177 with satiny smooth DLC and hardened titanium. Should be much more durable than a standard PVD.

This why I still don't own one. Maybe this thread will change my mind.

Great choice for a new thread. I'm now looking at PVD watches due to an allergy to nickel. I purchased this one to start with.
It is easier to forgive than to dispose of a body!

Here are my current ones. The only one I ever had an issue with is the ML on the crowns the coating is coming off basically with not much wear either.
I found looks wise I prefer a flat black or very dark grey to a glossy finish on pvd/black. Love the finish on the junghans.

I suppose it's like any branch of horology, generally easy to try except for its $$$$$ and time consuming parts. You will either like it or move on with more knowledge, experience and less doubt, and sometimes you realize what you've been missing and wonder what took you so long.
Full disclosure, the watch on that pic has a minute nick and tiny scratch visible on the lower edge of the bezel at 6 o'clock and another small scratch not visible on pic. These are mostly invisible when looking at watch, only at certain angles and lightning, and best of all this being a tool watch it doesn't bother me at all. I think it actually enhances it by giving it some tool cred, and I actually like it, but others may not.
I have several others I'll be posting in time, all pristine.
The way I see it, if you obsess over any blemish, constantly seeking it out, it will bother you on any watch, otherwise only at times, hardly, or never.

The quality of the coating is important. I know Citizen makes surface coatings that are at least 5 times harder than steel, Duratec, DLC, and others with different names and hardness. Some Casios and others do too.McLovin wrote:

Hard to tell the quality of the surface coating when they don't disclose any information beyond a PVD coat, which is simply the application process Physical Vapor Deposition. Citizen for one has another process that slightly penetrates beyond the surface into the metal, MRK, which they use on different cases I believe, mostly titanium.
I am much more familiar with Citizen than others about these coatings, hence why I mention it.

I am down to two such automatics.
My one-off Glyvicta. Cerakote by MCWW. The quality of Jay's work has fallen off a cliff, sadly.
A Kickstarter special (their pic) that I rarely wear. Heavy, interesting case work, but I never bonded with it.

Just my $0.02 USD as always.
