You can get with this, or you can get with that

We all love a this or that/help me choose thread, right?
Well here's mine.

Lately, I've been on hunt for the Seiko Presage SARY103.
Such a gorgeous dial.

Then lately, I discovered the even more limited Presage SARY085, which has an equally lovely dial.

And now I'm torn which of the two I should seek out.
I know the SARY103 is easier to get, but do I hold off and go for the SARY085 instead?

I don't have a white dial watch, so the 103 is tempting. Also like that it is readily available if I decide to pull the trigger.
But I do like the contrast between hands and dial on the 085, although I do have other black and blue dial watches in my collection.
Definitely don't have the funds to get both.

The blue starlight doesn't do it for me. Definitely SARY103 Fuyugeshiki for me.

Can’t find the Starlight anywhere...so, why not buy the fuji now to wear while searching for the next one (starlight or by then new model)?

You gotta get both. I won't abide your one choice poll!

So, possibly a bit biased as I own the PR version of the Starlight, but if you can't get both (and can find a Starlight), get the blue.

I too was looking at the white dial but was slightly underwhelmed by it in person. (Particularly the PR version, on which the small seconds sub-dial has a weird pearl finish that doesn't match the dial and to my eye looked a bit gaudy and cheap.)

The non-PR version was better, but a bit bland. The Starlight dial definitely has more depth.

One other point is that both versions of the white dial I saw were on bracelet, which I felt didn't really work with the dial. It's crying out for a classy leather strap.

Of course, if you've seen it in person and still like the dial, then the above won't make a difference. If you get the white, take pictures, as I may yet be persuaded to get one!

Great. Poll is tied. NOT HELPING.

But seriously, haven't seen either in person. Not sure if anywhere near me would have the Fuyugeshiki. However, getting to handle one or both could make a decision easier.

Went through my phone trying to find the pics I took of the white dial. Seem to have deleted all but one, but maybe it'll help.

Also a couple of pics of the blue for comparison.

Hmm. Now I'm thinking I may go back and get the non-PR version. Bah.

I have always preferred the non-PR versions of the Presage models.
Especially when they have more interesting dials.

Made my choice, kind of by happenstance.

[img][/img]

Here's a story only this group would truly understand and appreciate.

I figured the best route to making a decision was to see if I could potentially see the Fuyugeshiki for myself.
Since it was the latest release and I live in a large metropolitan city, figured someone might have it in stock.

Pulled all the Presage AD dealers in and around my area from Seiko USA's website and basically started calling everyone.
Worked my way from the furthest out to the closest and then stores I've never heard of to ones I did.
Figured I'd up end with a couple of strong contenders for having stock on the model.

After calling about fifteen or twenty locations, most didn't have it or even know about it. One store told to order it from SeiyaJapan, and a few spots mentioned they didn't have it but could order it.
Finally one location said they had it in stock and offered 30% off the retail if I wanted to come in and get it!
That put that store in the lead.

Then one of the locations that I reached out to earlier and had asked for the reference number so they could check with their rep and call me back, called me back.
Not only could they get it in stock, they offered it at a price well below anywhere I've seen it online. Even below the 30% off the one store that had in stock was offering.
However, in order for them to bring it in, I'd basically have to preorder it over the phone. The guy sensed my hesitation and asked what price I was hoping to get. I gave him a number that was below his lowball offer and we eventually met in the middle. It was an offer too good to pass up, so gave him my info and waited for it to deliver to them.

I just picked it up earlier today.
With tax and out the door, I got the Fuyugeshiki for less than $300!
Very pleased.

And this is totally cliche, but pictures really don't do the dial any justice.
It is gorgeous.

Way to work the deal! I would say less happenstance and more by working the local AD scene.

Dang that is quite a deal. Good job John!

For those wanting a reference, the cheapest online I could find in a few minutes of googling was $440 from Gnomon and $427 from Sakura Watches, which I have no experience with. Over $450 on ebay and $460 from Seiya!
I wish that watch were 38mm?

For those obsessively checking, ebay has one for $420 and Relojasdemoda.com currently has it priced at $408 (364,46€)
