3D Printers?

Is anyone else here a 3D printing enthusiast?

I have a MakerGear M2 at work, and was curious to see how much overlap there is in this community.

I want one, I have no need for one, but I want one.

Does anyone need one? Not really. It just takes away tooling costs and makes some fabrication repeatable and trivial. I have been able to make things that weren’t commercially viable that a small community actually needed. The parts weren’t anything that couldn’t have otherwise been made, but the trial and error costs became negligible and part cost was minimal for the utility.

I enjoy having it as a tool, but it isn’t the only tool I would want to have. I won’t talk about the lowering costs of printers as we all know we don’t need enabling.

That would be a pretty good use case. I would have to look at the shroud design, but it should be doable. You could have a number of shrouds and swap in the right color as desired.

I would like to print movement spacer rings, gaskets and some rubber Timex-type straps that aren’t available any more or were never made in a material that lasted.

Last summer I took my kids to a science and engineering event for kids. They had a couple there making toys and things. Really crazy what you can do with them. I never would have imagined having something like that available for home use.

I had access to a makerbot at work, never could quite pull the trigger myself for one at home; but I've made a number of prints with services such as Shapeways.
