Inkless pens?

Post by watchpalooza »

These look cool, but nearly every review I read says the writing is light-colored. Anyone have any experience with them?

No experience, but like you said everything I've read about them mentions the lightness of the writing.

That would be my main resistance to buying on. I can not stand it if my pen or pencil doesn't have a sharp, bold line.

No experience with them either but I have heard poor feedback about the writing properties ie the line is too light, too thin etc

Yeeah, I think I will skip the inkless pen and focus on going paperless with my ipad.

Watched a few video reviews. Do I understand correctly that these are basically pencils, but metallic instead of graphite? How long do they last?

This is accurate. My understanding (have not personally used one) is that small amounts of metal “rub off” on the paper to make the markings, but it is such a minute amount that it would take many many years to notice any difference.

I saw these in passing and had a hunch they might be metal. This thread got me to finally do a little digging, and sure enough. Most only go as far as saying it's a "special metal alloy" though a few references say it's lead, or at least a lead alloy. As in the metal, Pb, not graphite. Anyway, that means they're more like unerasable pencils than pens. If you've ever accidentally scraped something metal against a matte-painted wall and left an indelible mark then you've already experienced this effect.

As an aside, this is also related to silverpoint, an art method which uses silver (meaning the metal once again, Ag) as a drawing medium.

While scrolling through Touch of Modern listings, noticed they had a sale going on for some inkless pens.
$28 per color. Not sure if that is a good price or not.
