I'm not sure this counts as a bargain per se, but Hodinkee is offering $750 on all its preowned Rolexes through Sunday. The prices don't look (to me) like they've been raised in anticipation of this sale.

People have lost their minds paying $10k for a used, steel Datejust. It’s not even in the spirit of watch enthusiasm anymore. It’s the same idiotic hysterics that keep me from being able to find a house. I wonder if Rolexes will crash like home prices are about to. Probably not since watches have worldwide demand.

Totally agree, but the prices on the Air Kings some of the OPs and even a couple of Explorers are less than retail. I don't understand why some of them are so much hotter than others, but since I tend to like the less expensive models aesthetically, I'm not all that bothered. It's a good thing I don't want a "tiffany" OP or a GMT or a Sub.

I think watch prices will settle down eventually. I think this all stemmed from people sitting around during covid lockdown and generally wanting more comforts and luxuries. All watch prices have gone up. I cant find a moonwatch in good condition for less than 4k now, while a few years ago the prices were in the 2k range. I've seen this in other niche hobby communities too which have kind of exploded in recent years.

The thing is unlike other companies, Rolex went all-in and capitalized on it and doubled down on making their watches hard to buy. People are lining up to buy trinkets and jewelry they dont even want so they can prove they're worth having a rolex sold to them.

Funny enough, I would love a blue dial Milgauss or a white Explorer II some day. I think those are two of the most interesting and nicest watches Rolex offers. But because they're not the ones people are rabid for, the prices remain somewhat reasonable.

Hopefully it'll all settle down soon... until then I'm with Jay Leno on this one - similar reason for why he doesn't own any Ferraris, even though he could:

These are actual NOS and someone found a case of them in a warehouse someplace. I paid more for one in far worse condition. These are fun and I may get more than one so that I can record a message and send it with the watch.
