Things We Love About Watches

Post by Sporkboy »

As a counterpoint to the Watch Pet Peeves thread, I would like to hear about all the little details that make you live a watch. Pictures are encouraged.

I really love it when a second hand is balanced with the same amount of mass on both sides of the pinion. Bonus points for second hands that are more interesting than a simple stick. As an example, I think that the Timex Scout’s arrow second hand does a great job with this.

Great thread idea! I tend to prefer watches where the maker has sweated the little details...things like:

- Sapphire crystal with AR coating
- Drilled lugs
- Screw back, preferably exhibition
- Raised indices
- Fully lumed bezel insert (for watches that have one)
- Lumed second hand...love watching it go at night
- Textured dial
- Hallmarked crown
- Hallmarked buckle
- Tapered band
- Solid bracelet
- Deployment clasp that is not stamped, but milled

The ticking sound of an automatic.
I wish that watch were 38mm?

What Boourns said! Plus, just knowing that I have a little machine on my wrist and understanding that each has it's own idiosyncrasies. To be honest I may not have been as drawn to watches were it not for all of the technology in my life.

I love that style of 24-hr inner chapter ring. Have seen it on your Timex, my Loris, and a vintage Oris.

Speaking of that Lorus, I love a bead blasted finish on a tool watch.

I see FTE mentioned this already but the very first thing that comes to mind is drilled lugs. I know there are obvious benefits to them but I have love for drilled lugs that is way out of proportion with the actually utility.

I absolutely LOVE when a company goes the extra mile to match a date window to the dial. And I am not just talking about a black date wheel on a black dial (however I do love that too!). The only ones that come to mind are some of the ATs, but I seem to remember a microbrand doing it with some sort of teal or seafoam dial. Matching both the fonts and background takes a watch to another level (for me at least).

I also love that after a certain amount of adult beverages I SWEAR my Seikos beat at 4hz. Even the ones that don't lol. The drunker you are the smoother they sweep. However, I have yet to be drunk enough for my vintage russians to appear to be 28,800, but that's probably because I can hear the ticking from across the room lol.

I love watch features that are or appear to be purpose made.

I have two watches that I consider 430am winter dog walking watches. One is the Lorus Lumibrite with full dial lume and the other is a MWC G10. Both have that bead blasted finish that I love.

Things We Love About Watches

I love the utilitarian touches on my Hamilton 992b, the specs of which were designed to improve dependability and readability to save lives.

Specifically the sans serif Arabic font and lever set feature. For those that don’t know about lever set watches, you have to remove the bezel/crystal and lift a little lever to change the time. This prevents the time from accidentally being changed while winding the watch.

This watch as a whole package just works. Each component adds to the other elements and it comes off as a masterpiece of functional design.

Those are sharp. I really dig bead-blasted cases, especially with flieger and military style dials.

I love long curvaceous hands. The Germans seem to do this best.
