The horror! THE HORROR!!!

Post by cairoanan »

So this just happened:

I was trying to avoid a co-worker in a tight corridor at work and I bumped into a door knob. I heard a metal on metal and my heart sank. I went to my office and looked and dammit!!! Dammit! Not my 33! Why oh why could it not have been an homage watch or some shiz. Dammit to hell.

Anyone have any ideas on how to mitigate?

That realyyyyyy sucks. It'll be extremely hard to polish because it happened between the chamfered edge I think. I would try taking it to a local jeweller and see if they can do it. Otherwise if you feel risky you're gonna need a scotchbrite pad, Dremel, and polishing compound.

That’s what I was afraid of hearing. It will never go unnoticed. Like a scratch in the roof of the mouth that never heals.

Sometimes that kind of damage can add character.
Or sometimes people say that to make you feel better about the situation...

Hope you can get that repaired to your satisfaction.

Thanks JP - I sent those pics to a coworker who’s got a jeweler friend for their take.

It does certainly have character now. Never thought of the sarb as being my beater dress watch. But I think honestly the initial dread has worn away. It’s just a watch. There are bigger things to actually fret about.

I did a cursory search for a replacement case and/or broken or non-working SARB033, but nothing came up.

Not a bad idea! Hadn’t thought of that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintsugi
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

I suppose it could be applied to Japanese watches as well?

Ouch! I have a few watches that it wouldn't bother me one bit to scrape it like that. But most others, including the SARB033, my heart would have sank too. I think I would be inclined to take it to a pro if it were me......to at least find out what it would cost to clean it up a bit. Like you mentioned, I think the disappointment will diminish with time but I hope you can get it looking to your satisfaction again. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

There it a tool watch, I think that a big ding could add character, but this sadly doesn’t work on a dress watch. Small everyday scratches and such I think are OK, and do act as a testament to a life lived.

I feel for you. I smashed a watch into a doorknob a few weeks back and put a nice scratch in the mineral crystal. It bothers me a tiny bit, but it is a tool watch...

I would definitely take it to a trusted jeweler to see what they could do and how much it would run. Please keep us updated.

Any update on what you decided to do? I scratched my sarb033 today somehow on the top of the bottom right lug. No idea how it happened, but it's nowhere near as severe as yours. Think I may give scotch Brite pads a go

For the time being, I’ve decided to do nothing. It’s sitting in its rightful place in the team Seiko section of the watch box. Maybe because I haven’t looked at it since that day, I haven’t thought about the damage.
