large numbers of guests

I noticed a burst of guest visitors yesterday -- 150+ -- who then promptly left. I'm seeing that again, now. Is there a specific thread they are visiting? Are they bots?

The next time I see it I'll look up the access log and see if it shows where they are coming from. I have a hunch it may be part of the cause of the 508 errors we've been getting.
