Trade coffee update:

Got my first coffee subscription in from Trade. Roast date indicates 4/11 (2 days before arriving!).

Very excited to sample what they have available.

Did it taste good?

A quick review of the Jura - I love it! It's a basic model, and I like how I just need to press 1 button (well, excluding the On button) to get a nice cup of coffee. Don't hate me as most coffee aficionados prefer having more control I know, but I guess I trust Jura haha Thanks to @watchpalooza for raising the brand to my awareness!

Thought I’d better add my cups worth to this thread- my bean to cup machine- it makes such a racket that Mrs Pybus won’t have it in ‘her’ kitchen- she hates coffee anyway, so I hang out alone in my caffeine lair!!

The coffee trade sent me:

Irving Farm: PNG Baroida/Papua New Guinea
Roasted in Millerton NY (right down the road from me)

First cup was extremely weak and I was quite disappointed. I thought about that dismal cup of coffee all day.

When I got back to the house, I looked at the beans. Matte brown, heavy..... 💡

It's a light roast! I knew it was, but in my early morning haze I had forgotten to up the temp on my Stagg EKG kettle from 200°F to 210°F.

Next day, bam wonderful coffee again.

I have yet to try the coffee in my moka pot. I will try it this weekend though.

Trade coffee in a moka pot update:

Was ok, but it had a bit of a sour finish (under extracted).

As it's a light roast this is extremely easy to do given a moka pot is 1:10 ratio. Moka pots do better with medium and dark roasts where not as much water is required for extraction.

Edit: I have updated my preferences to move more towards medium roast

Awesome! This prompted me to check out their other deals, and they have many coffee/tea items at big discounts:

My son brought home this compact kettle he used in his dorm. The fill lines on the side are helpful. Marked down 50% to $18.99:

Would you recommend this for a coffee newbie? Should I also buy the kettle?

Yes, it's easy to use. You can use it with or without paper filters, I've done it both ways. Without you can get some grounds in the coffee, depending on grind coarseness. I use a regular old drip machine paper coffee filter.

I'd recommend a goose-neck kettle, though a standard kettle is fine as well. A gooseneck just allows for better control of the pouring.

I don't have a Bodum, but I have this one and it's been wonderful:
