Beautiful dogs and excellent photos. Are they golden retrievers? Such thoughtful eyes.

Re: Post a Picture of Your Pet
Good news from the vet: Kira tested negative for heartworms! One year ago she had tested "slightly positive," which seems to mean that at first it is negative but then somehow they figure out it is positive after all -- I had that exact experience at two different vets, and they both ended up saying "slightly positive," which is a funny choice of words. Rewind six months to when I had adopted her from the animal shelter: they said she had tested negative. But when you consider that these dogs probably haven't been taking prevention every month (and heartworm is bad here), it makes sense that she had it but it wasn't detectable yet.
Anyhow, the first vet was all set to put her on what I later found out to be a fast kill treatment: it is fast, but it is very expensive and the animal must be strictly confined for six to eight weeks! I wanted a second opinion, and the second vet recommended a slow kill treatment because Kira showed no symptoms. Bonus: the slow kill treatment (in our case) was simply an Ivermectin-based preventative taken every month (as usual), plus one month of antibiotic to weaken the adult worms. Turns out Ivermectin is the bomb -- if she had started on that when I first adopted her, all of this might have been avoided (I was giving her a preventative, of course, but it wasn't Ivermectin).
Twelve months later, the slow kill has succeeded without stressing out the dog (Kira doesn't like being confined) or my wallet. Huzzah!

When you invite a pet into your family, you also inevitably invite heartbreak. For us, the heartbreak came yesterday.
Goodbye Delia. We love you and we'll miss you.
