I am in the same boat with you. My skills are always improving, but I have other demands on my time make me slow to deliver anything that I am happy with. If there is a project well within my skill set that someone wants then I am not learning through the project. At any rate, I have had opportunities over the years to turn great hobbies into businesses, but I have never done it. Seems like a good way to ruin a good thing to me.

Closing your thread sounds like something that forum would do. Not nice, but not out of character.

Totally agree. Monetizing hobbies is like marrying the head cheerleader...it’s never as hands-on as it was at the start, the things you once loved become monotonous and annoying, and its hard to get out once the factory starts producing. ;)

That sums it up quite nicely. I am a creative type, so moving from a creation and exploration model to a production one isn’t appealing to me. If I got someone else to do the production then it wouldn’t feel like my product.

Anyway, I am happy where I am at and appreciate the opportunities to monetize hobbies, it just isn’t for me. To account for all of the time I spend on creating something, I couldn’t charge enough to make it worth it to me to keep doing. I would regather give my work away and let people contribute something towards the materials. Having material costs of a project covered is always very nice.

If I can break even on the material costs for a hobby, then that is a huge win in my book. Actually making something that someone desires is gratifying to a point that I can’t really describe. In a society revolving around consumption, being able to actually make things sometimes feels like a super power.

I am glad to see this thread doing so well and that the makers out there have an outlet within the watch community to develop and hone their skills.

It is no surprise to many of us WIS specially on the super affordable range to get a decent watch with a garbage strap, bracelet, nato, etc.

Sometimes, the strap is just as important as the specs of the watch. When a 'Meh' strap is paired with a good watch; the watch just does not live up to his MAX.
A few weeks ago, I order a a couple of straps from @Tenessean87. Last night I received a great surprised. He included an extra strap and a few extra bits.

Not only his straps are just superbly well made; his straps are making a Trilogy very Complete thanks to his WIS-dom!

Post your best pairings!

Wow, those all look really well made and suit the watches perfectly. Looking at a watch and being able to figure out what would compliment it best is certainly a talent to be encouraged in a strap maker.

I look forward to seeing some of his work on my one of my watches some day.

Getting back into the swing of things. I know I have some straps to make, but wanted some easy practice first.

It’s been a while, but this watch didn’t look right on a nato.

Maybe I’ll bang out a couple more. Well see what time there is.

For an amateur* you have real talent!

How long have you been making straps as a hobby?

(* I use amateur not as a negative, but as a qualifier that you don't make straps for a living. It's not your main source of income)

Did it for a year or two and then got too busy. Top of the thread is pretty close to beginning if I remember correctly.
