As you may have noticed, we we're offline this morning. This was caused by the "Thanks" plug-in going rogue and using up way too many server resources. This triggered an automatic suspension by our hosting provider as they thought it was a malicious attack. The "Thanks" plug-in has been disabled, hopefully temporarily so I can determine if that was indeed the cause, and take steps to prevent it from happening in the future.

I apologize for the disruption and for any confusion that may have caused.

Let's Pick The Next Challenge!

Post by Sporkboy »

OK, I've been able to narrow down the poll choices thanks to the preliminary poll. Let's try a poll within the forum itself to see if we can get more people engaged here. If you are on TapaTalk, you'll need to log into the forum proper in order to vote. You can select up to two options.

If a spending limit isn't specified, it will likely default to $30.

Agreed. There are some mysteries that just aren’t worth looking into.

OK, I thought I posted a response here, but I guess not.

The results are pretty decisive, and we are going to be hunting for sub-$35 mechanical field watches as our second challenge.

Sounds good to me. Guess we need to set the rules.

Yes. Rules. That will be in another post. I can do that (tomorrow likely) unless AM wants to do it again. We will need to integrate the feedback from the post challenge discussion, and I think that there was one idea left undiscussed.

For now let’s talk about what a field watch is. Of course, finding loopholes and creatively breaking the rules is encouraged.

Thinking a discussion on rules, qualifications, etc might be a good conversation in the Discord channel.

If I may make a suggestion, I think to be a "field watch" it should at least have a 12-hour dial with every hour marked out numerically, and also a 24-hour track, either inside, or outside the 12-hour ring.

While this is mostly true, I would say that most of the numerals should be on the dial. A trench watch or trench-style watch with the sub-seconds hand doesn't have the 6 or a 13-24 hour track.

I still think this is going to be a tough challenge, but I hope that you guys are having an easier time than I am.

Edit: I did some digging and I am finding some watches, though the conditions are unknown. Here are some screen grabs of field watches that don’t have that 24 hour track...
