What's more welcoming than food? Went out and bought us some delicious stroopwafels. They're 100% carbs and 25% saturated fats too, it's magic! Have another one, Mot. By the way it was € 1.99, but we can go Dutch with the bill OK?

Today, we'll take a walk to the Dutch windmill nearby. But first, a visit to the wardrobe.

Here's my new statement strap that came in yesterday:

Or what about this one? Orange is the color of our royals.

This is our king, Willem-Alexander. He's happier on a speedboat.

It's a jungle out there. Dress for it :)

I think I like this one best:

They are possibly her favorite indulgence.

It's hot and humid, but thankfully only a five minute walk to the windmill nearby. There's an abundance of wildflowers along the path, it would be nice to come here more often.

The mill is called 'de Hoop' ('Hope') and dates back to 1865. The cap can be rotated 360 degrees to face any wind direction.
It closed in 1960, but was restored in the seventies and is now a restaurant.

If this looks like a four-handed clock to you, you've probably spent too much time on watch forums. I have :D
Time to get back before the rain.

Very cool! Wouldn't be a trip to the Netherlands without seeing a windmill.

Perfect strap choice to. I think I agree those colours match the watch nicely.
12 days postage time - pretty good for Aus.
Have fun with MoT - enjoying the story already.

Took the bike to catch the golden hour in the Breda city center with Mot. Had a brief confrontation with some Canadian geese on the way. Please move over, no stroopwafels today. :D

Image

Here's our elegant central church, Mot. It turned 750 recently.

Image

Breda has a harbor and a few canals. To the left is the Breda fortress, you can see the water gate. Here's where the Dutch rebel army famously pulled off a Trojan Horse-style victory over the occupying Spanish in 1590.

Image

Seventy-five Dutch soldiers hid under a load of peat that was delivered to the fortress by boat. At midnight, they unboarded and, though vastly outnumbered, chased out the Spanish forces and took the fortress. This flipped the city to the Dutch. Adios, amigos.

What's next? Lots of history around here. Vincent van Gogh worked here. If the weather permits we could go to Rotterdam. We'll see!

Hey, it's been too long! Mot has had some rest (if a quartz watch ever does) while I was on holiday in Italy with Mrs R. We had a wonderful time. Since then, Mot has been on my wrist on some of my biking trips. We live in a delta, the whole country is flat. It makes for great biking. "Dutch mountains" is a joke.

Image

Ten km biking and we're at the Belgian border. Here's a border stone.

Image

Borders are funny things. And sometimes terrible. In the past, a lot of smuggling has been going on here. Tobacco, booze, livestock were smuggled on foot through the woodlands. The law would be lying in wait. Check the blankets:

Image

In the 1950's butter was heavily subsidized here in the Netherlands, but not in Belgium, where it was twice as expensive. Butter smuggling boomed. Mrs.R's mother remembers how she, as a child, would carry the White Gold under her cloths on visits to Belgium. Smugglers had upped their game and were packing the stuff in old Chrysler Saratoga's and GMC's. The cops would lie in wait and give chase, shooting for the tires. But the smugglers' cars had been modded in James Bond style, to litter the road behind them with caltrops at the flick of a lever. So they got away with it most of the time. Come Sunday, cops and smugglers would attend the village church, exchanging meaningful glances, I imagine.
